Of course creating artificial life is the goal. Its about redefining the definitions of life, researching what life is, what consciousness is, what the essential characteristics of life are. Its about morality, religion, the frontiers of human advancement that may be the last technology we even invent.
And in the end, for better and for worse, its about playing god.
I think calling it a hype, like that rude guy, is beyond bizarre.
