Clients should talk to relays via TOR or VPNs. That's the only thing that can protect the IP and it works with the mints, too.
Relays should not be trusted to not leak events. They all will eventually. Therefore giftwraps provide secrecy even if the relay gets compromised.
Relays should not be concerned with user accounts. They should get paid per use and the most private and simple way of paying is e-cash.
As you say you did implement a relay ... so did I. It sucked as soon as I put it to the test and other projects were more important. What is your implementation? Is it battle tested?
