or you could've gotten an "ultraportable" 8086/88 for $11k that weighed 7 lbs, had 640kB RAM and a 20MB HD (and most models had no HD).
10 years later, an ultraportable (not a high-end one) would be a 3.4lb 500 MHz Pentium III and you could get faster machines as well.
Today, a ten year old laptop is still totally usable and I actually have a 10 y/o Macbook I keep around that still works fine.
Anyway, I'd be interested in actual examples of what lasts longer and doesn't.
