As a retro gaming enthusiast, Nike’s disastrous day is compelling.
I’ve seen this pattern happen so often with the collectibles market: hockey cards, comic books, Beanie Babies, etc.
And now sneakers.
The moment anyone thinks something is valuable, the scalpers and flippers swoop in and try to take advantage. Soon enough, it’s not fans who are buying this stuff, it’s other scalpers. Scalpers, themselves, become cognizant of this fact and they just want to offload the stuff on the “greater fool”.
Eventually, they cannot find a greater fool and the whole thing collapses.
