i just found an old page of notes i took about Jesse Jackson's platform in the 1988 democratic presidential primary. it would still be a strong left-Dem platform today in many ways - he wanted to re-create the WPA, he pushed single-payer healthcare and DC statehood.
one of the reasons he lost the primary is that 1988 was the first year that the Democratic Leadership Conference was active, trying to fight the influence of the '60s left.
what a damned shame.
