These are then used to do interact with the gov services, banks, etc. I can sign things, manage bank accounts without resorting to handwritten signatures, vote, etc.
It's not ideal though, the cards need to be reissued every n years, software support sucks unless you're willing to use ubuntu or debian.
Also, a friend won't tell a friend to use gpg, unless both are hacker peers
