The problem isn’t self inserts, the problem is that the people who are doing the most self inserting in stories are just enormously unlikable people. If John Smith in man of the high castle was a self insert, I’d say that’s a damn good self insert. But all the self inserts were the resistance characters, and they all suck. Man I wonder why.
