A few people disagree with me. Console gamers especially don’t like this game. However, this is due to The Witcher being very different from its sequels.
This is because The Witcher is a Diablo-like hack-and-slash RPG with an isometric perspective. You need a mouse to play this game. In fact, this is probably the major reason why The Witcher is *still* a PC exclusive and has never been ported to consoles – ever.
At one point, there was supposed to be a consolized version called Rise of the White Wolf but this was going to be completely re-built specifically for a console experience. However, that was never released.
I mention all this because if you enjoy Diablo-style RPGs, you will probably love The Witcher. It’s more story-focused than the Diablo games, and it does an excellent job in its world-building. Mind you, it doesn’t get as extensive as Diablo but the trade-off is that you *really* get invested in the adventures of Geralt of Rivia.
And actually, if you’ve never played Diablo-style game before, The Witcher is a great game to get started. Even now, it has a wonderful tutorial and even better quality of life comforts that make it approachable to *anyone*. You can literally control this game with just a mouse – no keyboard required.
Games like this are what make the PC gaming experience so incredible. There’s something comfy about sitting on your laptop, clicking around with your trackpad, as you explore this bewitching world.
A few folks say that The Witcher’s graphics haven’t aged well, but I disagree. This is exactly how a game from 2007 should look, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Certainly, Geralt’s character model looks substantially different from later iterations. He’s leaner and more hawk-like. Yet, I love the isometric perspective, the lighting, and those environments.
Even better, this game supports the 16:10 aspect ratio of my monitor, so I love it all the more for that reason.
The voice acting is mostly good. Sometimes it ventures into melodramatic territory, but this just enhances the experience. The music is suitably orchestral with some medieval flourishes, which is what I’d expect.
CD Projekt Red developed this game. Believe it or not, this was the first game they ever made – which is pretty fantastic for a first effort. Of course, CD Project is known for all the other Witcher games, Cyberpunk 2077. They are a subsidiary of CD Projekt, which owns [GOG.com](http://GOG.com ).
Yes, I recommend it because it is truly wonderful. Right now is a really good time to buy The Witcher because [GOG.com](http://GOG.com ) has it on sale for an -85% discount, selling at C$1.69.
