When I got started here and started also hacking on various (web) clients, I spent quite a bit of time trying to understand why, despite the AP protocol including dedicated metadata fields for both mentions and hashtags, I could get neither filled and/or displayed unless I also inserted the same as hyperlinked HTML to the text of the toot.
Turned out it was a missing feature in Mastodon parsing and rendering. Mastodon is finally catching up to its protocol here..
