When I first came [back] to Germany, I lived in the Bahnhof quarter of Frankfurt, where prostitution is legal, and rampant.

The first "street talk" I learned was from sex workers, and one of the first phrases I heard, often, was "bist du geil?", or "are you horny?"

This has led to "geil" being indelibly imprinted into my brain as "horny."

It was only later that I learned that the more common usage is "cool."
