Think about the average case police deal with. It's usually some drug dealer on facebook taking a picture of a brick of cocaine on his kitchen table. Usually those same guys are posting pictures of their address, street signs and cars (license plate included). I fail to see why there would be any need to waste resources contacting and waiting for facebook in a case like that. They might later verify the IP the posts came from but that would be for a court case, not an arrest.
