I think that Chi connection is indeed correct - the symbol used by Constantine was the kairos, or Chi Rho, and the connection to time is pretty obvious, given that the spelling of the symbol is exactly the same as the spelling for kairos in rhetoric, where it meaning "opportune moment."

Unfortunately in Constantine's case, he meant it as the opportune moment to use Christianity for his political ambitions, and he used the merger of state and religion to exterminate all the Christians with this, or similar, knowledge. The greatest tragedy in human history, IMO.
