Gauge swatch pro tip: if your piece is knit in the round, best to do a gauge swatch in the round if size really matters.
For example, if you have a motif that has a pattern row on round one and a knit row on round two, it's tempting to swatch flat, converting that to pattern row/purl row.
But if your knits and purls have a different tension (and they probably do) then your gauge swatch won't represent the final piece.
