IMHO in the last 20-odd years of computing, they have been the single most aggressive force in turning generative machines into appliances. Single-(/limited-)purpose things that do a thing only in a predetermined, centrally controlled way.
Then Google realized they'd lost this, but since they had the best understanding of the web at the time, they worked on controlling its future and turning it into an appliance under their control.
Amazon did shops.
