In the US, it has long been very similar. I grew up white trash and lower class, I started working when I was 14 in service industries, and back in the 00s, unions and activists didn't want to have anything to do with someone like me. I wasn't really welcomed into places because i couldn't afford to buy tickets for a show or splurge on a coffee or whatever.

Heck, most places wouldn't even let me use the bathroom if i didn't have money to spend. And when I first got interested in leftist politics, there weren't any community centers or meet-ups where everyone was welcome in my area. Part of this is because of paranoia - US police agencies and the FBI did tend to try to disrupt things like Food Not Bombs, so fair. But the result is there's no real movement, just middle class kids with spare time to philosophize and play pretend.
