Real worst-case might have been if a city-buster hit Earth during the Cold War, actually hit a city and not an ocean-and was mistaken for a nuclear attack. The resulting nuclear exchange would have been far worse than the original asteroid strike.

The odds of that were probably far higher than the odds of Earth being hit by another "dino-killer" size asteroid that would do similar damage.
