1. have a plan even if it’s very loose and you don’t follow it
2. listen to a think what reviewers say but don’t treat it like marching orders
3. get a writing group if you can; don’t rely on friends/family (there’s too much at stake, emotionally)
4. read a lot, both in your chosen genre and outside of it
5. write a lot (sadly, social media mostly doesn’t count)
