Take this concept to the logical extreme: Not just lycanthropy but pancanthropy. For every organism a viral variant that alters DNA and thus morphology on a lunar trigger. You could be a were-chicken, a chicken could be a were-person, a wolf could be a were-mosquito...
The only question is should these viruses layer? or should contracting a new one knock the previous one out? Is it possible to cure a case of werewolfism by contracting were-person from a chicken with the were-person variant?
