Rode past a billboard claiming that Smart & Final has been around since 1871. Looked it up on Wikipedia only to discover that not only does one of its ancestors date back to 1871 but that Smart & Final was named after a Mr. Smart and a Mr. Final.
So I looked to see if there was a Mr. Safeway. Not the founder of the chain, at any rate. Mr. Skaggs felt he shouldn't name after himself a store that might outlive him.
Obviously, that didn't bother Messrs. Smart or Final.
