Have you reviewed Peter Siebel's book as well? I know it often gets mentioned as the next step up for those that think Touretzky is too basic.
Personally I have always held Touretzky in high reagard for being so clear and expressive.
The lisp community do have a recruitment issue, and while I think it's a social problem, bad introduction texts doesn't exactly help.
