I just tracked down a 1972 article on the colour morphs of NZ fantails, written by John Craig and published in the journal Notornis.

Around Dunedin, there were more black morph fantails in native evergreen forest than in more open habitats. In native forest, the black-and-white pied morph fantails tended to forage in the canopies of trees, while the black-morph birds tended to forage lower down in the forest and on the ground.
