One of the problems I see, going forward, is that one-time pay relays have no incentive to continue service, as they will never cover costs with that model. They've already collected the money, but they will receive no more money from the same people, and even scaling up in customers doesn't help the bottom line, as each new user adds costs, rather than covering the remaining costs from the previous user.
We're going to see those relays eventually all switch to a subscription, fee-to-post, or close, or they have to be cross-financed through a client they're well-integrated with (like on a community or damus) or some sort of cross-selling to a premium service (like wine). Or they have to stay so small, that the costs are negligible.
