Pedersen commitments are mathematically sound in a way that auditability of the supply is ensured the same way. Auditability of the supply comes from being able to make sure that what the miners mine is the total supply. Total amount transparency is one way to ensure that. However there are mathematical constructs that hide the amounts while maintaining the auditability of the base layer.
