I think the #Fediverse is a quantifiably more #toxic place than #Twitter because of the lack of an #algorithm.
Everyone complains that #Mastodon is full of contrary nerds who don't get jokes, but the real problem is that none of us are seeing anything we actually like. It's just an unfiltered feed of whatever boring drivel some rando farted out, and we all hate it.
We're scratching for dopamine in a system that's incapable of producing it.
