One of the reasons this is so confusing is that there are also much earlier state deadlines for the *primary* elections, which are the elections held in spring to select that state's delegates to the party nominating conventions. But the winner of state's primary need not be the person who appears on the general election ballot for that state. That's what's determined at the conventions.
