Is this the world's first ever reishi djembe? Either way, this was a really fun personal project for me.
Mycoworks is a company that is developing leather alternatives for fine luxury bags (fungus-based, instead of animal-based).
They sent me a sample in order to see if this new material can be used for percussion instruments.
THE ANSWER IS YES!
It sounds not like a djembe (traditionally goat skin), nor a conga (traditionally cow hide), but more like an Irish bodhrán or a Native American frame drum.
