In alpha Minecraft you just tried random shit or googled how the game works. Then the game had it's formal release and people already knew/if you approached the community people taught you that way.

Also, Minecraft's biggest publicity was YouTubers, so if you bought the game there's a fair chance that you already knew how to play due to seeing it being played.
