My favorite Easter memories are from when I was a little girl. My parents sat me down to tell me that God would love me just as much if we didn't go to church at all. We stopped going to mass with the family and spending time with a bunch of toxic folks on the holiday and instead would go to Ocean City, MD. My dad would go to the pubs, my mom would go shopping, and I'd run amok at the arcades binge eating all the candy I could grab at a five finger discount.
In the evening we would get together and watch Jesus Christ Superstar. I still watch that movie every Easter weekend.
As an adult I can understand how blasphemous it all was, but as a kid it was a weekend that everyone seemed sincerely happy when we otherwise weren't and it did feel deeply spiritual to me for that reason.
