If you hide all the parts of you that you think will chase away people who are AGAINST your demographics- like being pro-diversity, being #disabled, #queer, or otherwise marginalized- then you might get SOME more followers but they might lash OUT at you if your posts reveal what your beliefs are. Being open about your stances lets YOUR crowd find you and keeps antagonistic folks away.
