He blames the solvents encountered during that work for the two cases of lymphoma that he has survived (via the miracles of modern medical research, which the US has just defunded).
If we want to make America a great manufacturing hub again, we should ensure that the work is physically and mentally safe. Of course, all the things that you and he were doing would probably be automated today.
