There was NOTHING cool about the Gremlin, lol. The Gremlin was produced by the "novelty division" of AMC for laughs... a hasty an unserious attempt to create a car to meet the 1970s gas crisis by lopping off the back end of a heavier car (the AMC Hornet).
Consumer Reports tried really hard to say something nice about the Gremlin in their review. "Good crash bumpers" was the best they could manage, before comparing the rear seat off the Gremlin to the 20th Century's version of an iron maiden.
The only reason AMC sold a fair amount of Gremlins was because the competition was worse. The Ford Pinto exploded when rear-ended... and the Chevy Vega's aluminum block engine melted under stress.
