I've had this debate before.
It always involves a demographic that doesn't feel the derogatory word applies to them.
"Washington Redskins" was fine, debated, and handwaved by thousands of light-pigmented local residents with no Native American history or identified culture.
My family makes this same argument when I talk about narrow-minded and bigoted word, and the counter with "but the dictionary says..."
