They basically did the same thing jews do with the Holocaust now. Christians would commit vandalism and other crimes, then when the authorities were called and one of them wound up "martyred" they'd cry victim and use it to rally.
Wash, wrinse, repeat.
It's a strategy that works so Whites are welcome to adopt it, but it wasn't actually very Christian in the sense of What Christ directly taught.
