Not the boomers, but the (*insert group name*) who control the politicians would have a field day. Everyone would vote for whatever communist candidate that they run to fix the fact that their grandparents and parents had to move into their house to survive.
Slow and steady has benefits. As much as I'd love to rip the bandaid off today, half the country would be completely fucked. You can't quit a drug cold turkey if the withdrawals will kill you.
