IMO, modern music production focuses too much on compression and high gain. Everything's loud. The spectrum is packed.
Think about how, say, Dark Side Of The Moon, has tracks where part is almost inaudible, but builds to a crescendo. Modern music hits the limiter right away, and tends to stay there thru the entire track.
