On this day in 1953, the CIA’s first successful coup overthrew Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and his democratically elected government.
He was a prominent figure in Iran's secular democracy and resistance to colonialism. He nationalized the oil industry and implemented radical measures like land reform, social security and wealth redistribution. These policies directly threatened Western interests.
This atrocity became a template that the west used against Global South ever since.
