It was surprising to me the first time I heard that various painkillers and anaesthetics can reduce emotional pain and not only physical pain.
Makes more sense if you think about it. You're numbing nerves, including the ones in your brain. Emotional pain is just a nerve signal within the brain.
Take enough of something that numbs your nerves and you're unconscious. You don't feel anything when you're unconscious.
Ketamine has the interesting effect that it shuts down pain before it shuts down other things. It kind of disconnects you. Never tried it before, but I've read about the effects.
They use ketamine in small doses as an antidepressant for clinically depressed patients. It does as many other antidepressants do: They make you feel indifferent, which is an improvement over being suicidal for some patients.
They're best combined with other interventions though. Improvements in life situation and lifestyle where possible, therapy to help cope with the inevitable.
