To me, jazz is a warning on what happens when academics appropriate popular music and “museum-ify” it.
Don’t get me wrong. I respect academics quite a bit. They’ve done a great job of preserving music history.
But the flip side is these music academics seem to divorce jazz from its modern living practice.
This is specifically how I feel about Ken Burns 2001 documentary *Jazz* and how it glossed over everything made after 1961.
