This was something heavily debated back in 2021. The STX team have not deviated from the position below.

Given the state of play across crypto and how the rest of the ecosystem has been allowed to operate it’s a reasonable position to take in order to try and compete. Under a full Bitcoin standard it’s harder to see why a token is needed but while we’re on a fiat standard and incentives are skewed as they are it’s more understandable.

This for me really shows how the old (existing) system and new system are colliding… with STX you have Bitcoiner’s bridging over. Not everyone will agree but I see the argument for and against.
