Engineers often have a broken evaluation mechanism. Uni CS is often “weed out” which overwhelmingly favors those who had a head start in high school. Many take this model to their hiring tasks and assume “best” must be those with today’s knowledge. But a fast learner is often a better choice than the “133t tricks” assessment winner. You see so many self-taught engineers because uni CS programs repel new talent. So says this tenured professor with > 27 yrs experience. Cast a wider net.
