Long story short, I was in Mexico using my broken Spanish to try and learn some Maya from a native speaker who barely spoke more Spanish than I did.
One of the first phrases I learned was “how are you” followed by apparently the only acceptable answer: “I’m well.”
In their culture, it’s unacceptable to answer any other way. I feel it is the same here, nobody really wants to know. I have some very close friends that want to know what I’m doing, but I see them 6-7 days a week. Half the things I could talk about involve them. 😆
Most people when they ask “what you been up to lately” they really want about a half sentence answer. They maybe haven’t seen you for 10 years, but they tune out if you actually start talking about what you’ve been doing for the last 10 years. Sad.
