I'm not sure if the alpha version has those improvements as well; nightly is pretty stable (as in: doesn't crash much) so it's worth a try. It's certainly more stable than 1.2.2 in my experience.
As for plugins - sure we support those. Just instrument and effect plugins, but I'm not aware of other DAWs having more than that. We don't support every type, but the most used ones.
