IMO their call was fine, and Lando turned into a drama. Lando's attitude was ridiculous. They pitted him first to ensure he wouldn't fall back to P3, and he repays the team by making everybody uncomfotrable and making a mess out of Piastri's well-deserved first win.
And before anyone says that P2 was already safe, remember McLaren have been trashed for several races now for "bottling the strategy". They wanted to be 100% on the safe side with no room for error.
