Living close to the Canada/USA border, we used to travel to the states frequently - camping trips, entertainment, events, etc.
About 12 or so years ago (I can't remember exactly), we had been camping in Canada and were headed across the border. We usually went with no food on board, but since we'd already been camping, there were a few things in the refrigerator.
The border guard asked what food was in the trailer. I responded, but also indicated "I think that's it". She asked to have a look. Sure! So I hopped out of the truck and unlocked the trailer and went in with her so she could look in the fridge.
All was ok with one exception - I had a single tomato and they are not allowed across the border. My fault, sorry.
The berating I received was over the top. For a moment, I thought she was going to haul me in and issue a huge fine or lock me up.
Most border guards would have just taken it and sent us on our way. At our usual crossing, they've always been friendly, helpful, and understanding.
Long story short, I was shaken up by the time we left. You'd have thought I had a kilo of drugs or something.
Now, imagine if this happened today.
