This is probably the most widespread misconception. 1 GW in PV is not the same thing as 1 GW in nuclear, due to variability - not even close.

For a practical illustration, I will reach to my favourite example of Germany: a country that has ~60 GW average demand, and 80 GW in PV and 70 GW in wind. Yet, on the chart below you can see PV output is close to zero (0.18% to be precise) and wind is 33% so the country runs primarily on coal (50%) and gas (22%) right now.

Among all currently available and scalable electricity sources #nuclear today is the only one that is:

low-carbon (unlike coal and gas)
dispatchable (24/7, unlike PV and wind)
geography independent (unlike hydro or PV)

And this isp precisely why when you look at Germany’s closest neighbour France, their CO2 intensity is 10x lower than Germany’s.
