@9q9fhqziw8u8lh9x@fedi.shorks.gay As I understand, sadly, it has to be a "meta" play; game theory stuff. The automated scrappers are already wasting massive amounts of resources, far dwarfing any resources used by normal users. Proof of work means normal users will waste a small amount of resources, while automated scrappers would find the scaling costs astronomical, so the scrappers /have/ to stop. Normal users end up wasting and polluting a lot, to make the scrappers lose hope and stop wasting and polluting billions of times that "a lot".

I had to deploy proof of work to protect my business clients so many times, and every time it hurts my soul to know I'm wasting resources and human life time by doing it, but I cannot see another option. It's a classic "we can't have nice things" / tragedy of the commons situation. Some people are just jerks and are willing to destroy so much for but a tiny little bit of gain. Now imagine the gains they're dreaming of when they hallucinate about their own personal AGI, and how much destruction they're willing to inflict to get to it. As a sysadmin I have to somehow stop /that/.
