Yes, that’s correct. I would prefer a wired connection as it’s more reliable. I’m not aware of any workaround for this on the Bitaxe, but there are other home miners available. I’ve seen hints that BTCsessions (npub1rxy…hnp8) is currently looking at home miners, so I expect he’ll have a video soon with other options.
I am aware Braiins make a home miner.
