#Russia head of foreign intelligence Sergey Naryshkin announced today that ‘Russia is close to achieving the goals set for the SMO [special military operation]’ because ‘Ukrainian forces are on the verge of collapse’ and the West has ‘failed to provoke the situation in Russia’. Most interestingly, however, Naryshkin says at the same time that ‘it is the West that is trying to impose a prolonged war on Russia’ in order to ‘provoke a colour revolution’ - the one that the sentence earlier it ‘failed to provoke’.
I don’t know if the Kremlin appointed Naryshkin to preach this nonsense as punishment for him hesitating on 21 February 2022, not to mention that he is the head of foreign intelligence (SVR) and not defence or foreign minister to make such declarations.
Perhaps the fact that the head of the SVR is just saying this means that this is a deliberate strategic communication representing some kind of offer to the West? Or is Naryshkin the last Russian politician tolerated by Western diplomacy?
The claim that the West is trying to impose a prolonged war on Russia is of course absurd but above all contradicts recent statements by Lavrov and Putin that the war is going so perfectly that no ceasefire is out of the question.
Nonetheless, it seems like some ice has cracked and started to move, we just don’t know where to…
