The boundary between the mercury and vacuum will cause some of the mercury to become vapor. As the vacuum continues to expand, the gas density of the mercury vapor will decrease, causing even more of the mercury to become vapor. Eventually it has to reach an equilibrium when the liquid mercury has decreased to the point where it balances out the atmospheric pressure",
