I think there are sincere activists who believe the old Popperian logic of "the tolerant need not tolerate the intolerant" applies here (they are wrong, but sincere), and I think there are psychopaths who see this as an opportunity to control others.

I think what you are describing here matches the later people. They exist, but they always existed, and they are parasites. 'The shadow can only mock, it cannot make.' They attach to anything already present that gives them that power (90% of the bad rap of religion comes from them: it amazed me in the AppleTV series Schmigadoon! that they seemed completely unaware that the religious bigot villain sounded more like a wokester from HR than anyone remotely contemporary.)

They can't be the explanation, because they were here before wokeism began, and will be here after it passes.
